3Glasses Blubur S1 Evaluation

HTC Vive, Oculus CV1, PSVR and the VR headset from Microsoft have gradually settled the game, but there are a few outstanding domestic PC VR products as well and 3Glasses is one of them. As an advanced domestic VR hardware brand, 3Glasses is rapidly professionalize its VR product development, and at the same time, it is paying great attention to the content as well. Apart from setting up the developer platform VRSHOW, it also teamed with many strategic partners to launch attractive VR content. By enhancing the performance and enriching the content, it comprehensively elevate the user experience. Blubur S1 is the first consumer version after the two developer versions (D1&D2). It has a customized VR two-eye screen providing 2880×1440 high resolution experience. Also its PPI exceeds 700, FOV reaches 110° and frame rate reaches 120Hz. At the same time, Blubur S1 is the first domestic VR headset that utilize customized two-eye screen. But indeed how is its performance? We better refer to the below evaluation. (This evaluation is by Chinese VR media DMgeek.)

Appearance

Overall speaking, Blubur S1 looks very similar to CV1. Its force is distributed to the back of the head and two sides, and the sponge lint inside the headset also reduce the stress on the face as well. After the mask is fit to the face, there is no discomfort in the cheek or forehead area. And the earphone design on both sides, just like CV1, offer great convenience for gamers who haven’t got one. The earmuff is made by leather and soft sponge, therefore it is comfortable to wear and it won’t nip the ear or move around. Above the right earphone there is a 3.5mm earphone jack as well, users can switch to their preferred earphone.

You might be curious whether the headset with the extra earphone would be pretty heavy? And if so, then it won’t be as comfortable as previously said. A normal headset should weight between 400-600g, and Blubur S1 weighs 453g per our measure, which is much lighter than the 570g HTC VIVE. People who have experienced VIVE all knows that VIVE wears comfortably, therefore Blubur S1 has done a pretty good job in this regard.

There is a keypad and a touchpad on the right side of the headset. The official stated that currently it is useless and the keypad function will be active in the future. The keys’ pressing sound is crisp, and the touchpad and the knob moves smoothly. At the bottom right side of the headset is a pupillary distance adjust knob with an adjustment range of 60mm-74mm, it can satisfy the needs of users with different puillary distances. At the same time, Blubur S1 has an infrared distance sensor to detect whether the user is wearing the headset or not as well.

Configuration

After introducing Blubur S1’s appearance in detail, we will move to its configuration as VR headset’s appearance is less important than hardware and the core of the hardwear lies in its lenses and its screen.

1.Lens

The VR headset is all about lenses. We have to say Blubur S1 pays great attention to the workmanship of it. Blubur S1 adopted 3.5mm medical grade optical material aspherical lenses, therefore its spectal range is relatively larger than normal glasses. The lenses have anti-blue light treament as well, though we won’t elaborate on the harm of blue light here.

3glasses04

Official states that FOV is 110, according to DMGeek’s test, actual it’s about 100. But it doesn’t affect immersion too much.

2.Screen

Blublur S1 utilize customized VR two-eye screen, offering 2880×1440 high resolution experience for both eyes. Its PPI exceeds 700 and the refresh rate reaches 120Hz. For the screen we will mainly test its ingame frame rate as most of the motion sickness are caused by low frame rate and high afterglow. The equipment’s low latency reaction speed eliminate the problem of afterglow and the frame rate will depend on the user’s graphic cards.

Content Platform

Most PC headset have its own content platform or corporation platform, so does 3 Glasses. 3Glasses is not only one of the first domestic VR hardware manufacturer and independently designed its own SDK for game development, it also launched its own content platform VRSHOW this year. This platform have massive content resources, including 3Glass exclusive games and panoramic videos.

3glasses07

The interface design of VRSHOW is very succinct. From games recommendation to panoramic resources sharing, all are very simple. The interaction is user friendly as well, for example, you can drag a local video document into the software and directly play it. Content of course is the most important aspect for VRSHOW. Currently there are 41 games in the platform, around half of them are free and its price are relatively cheaper in comparison to Steam. There are also around 1000 panoramic videos as well.  Apart from that Blubur S1 also support Steam content platform, which compensate for VRSHOW’s lack of game setback. Pitifully, currently Blubur S1 is not compatible with LightHouse station, therefore cannot run the spatial oriention function of some SteamVR games. Users can only experience standing model games.

Conclusion

With all former mentioned aspects considered, 3glasses pays great attention to the hardware of its first consumer flagship Blubur S1 and also devotes much effort in the development work to enhance the domestic users’ experience. In terms of visual experience and immerisve level, it is not far behind Vive. Actually, several of Blubur S1’s standards are higher than that of the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. In terms of price, Blubur S1 is much cheaper.  Being one of the few domestic PC VR headsets, Blubur S1 is the leader and worth recommending in terms of cost efficiency.
